Damn the Dam

The damn was above the city

It was over a century old

And was an engineering marvel

Designed by the best minds

Built to last forever

But how long was forever?

A century, millennia or more?

In summer it was idyllic

The sun on the water

Under a clear blue sky

With tree lined shores

And varied facilities

For a fun loving public

With a small sailing club

Swimmers enjoyed the shallows

People strolled along the dam

And were happy to relax

Things were perfect here

The inhabitants down below

Rested safe in bed at night

Knowing they were safe

How wrong they were

It started with a hairline crack...
